A $5,000 grant to the North Shore Crisis Services Society has been awarded from three Handsworth Secondary students in recognition of their work in promoting awareness of domestic violence.
Students from Handsworth Secondary’s Youth and Philanthropy Initiative asks students to select a local charity to research, interview, and compile a project on.
The three teenagers focused on familial violence, in addition to bringing attention to issues including homelessness and mental health.
The $5,000 award will support the center’s Second Stage Housing programme, according to Sandra Lee of the North Shore Crisis Services Society.
The flats, which house women and their children for up to 18 months and provide them with access to additional long-term support and the assurance that they can continue working or attending school in a safe environment, are a step above standard transitional housing, according to Lee.
The team, according to Lee, applauds the kids for their enthusiasm as well as their courage in bringing up such a sensitive subject.
