A lawsuit against the Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec has been authorized as a class action lawsuit and will be moving forward. The class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of victims of sexual abuse and assault from the 1940s to the present.
The class action covers all individuals that were sexually assaulted and their heirs, by the clergy or personnel under the responsibility of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec.
Class-action lawsuits against churches due to the actions of the priests, clergy, or other members have become common in recent decades. Similar class actions against the Roman Catholic church have been filed in British Columbia and other provinces around Canada.
Lawyers and legal scholars have long expected that class actions and other lawsuits would quickly spread, as with favourable court decisions more individuals may be willing to tell their stories without fear of retribution or a lack of justice.
