Toyota & Lexus Airbag Defect

On December 20, 2023, Transport Canada announced the recall of 99,965 Toyota and Lexus vehicles sold across Canada due to a defect related to the front passenger airbag.

Documents issued by Toyota state that the Occupant Classification System (OCS), which senses when an individual is sitting in the front passenger seat, is at risk of short-circuiting. When a short-circuit occurs, the sensor may be unable to detect weight in the front passenger seat. This alleged defect is evidenced by the “Passenger Airbag OFF” indicator light being activated when someone is sitting in the front passenger seat. This indicates that the front passenger airbag will not inflate if an accident occurs.

Toyota has stated a remedy for this issue will not be available until mid-late 2024. Toyota has advised consumers to refrain from having anyone sit in the front passenger seats of the affected vehicles until the remedy can be implemented.
