Quebec Superior Court Authorizes Class Action Against Cineplex for Deceptive Commercial Practices Related to Online Booking Fees

The Quebec Superior Court has authorized a class action against Cineplex, alleging that the company engaged in deceptive practices by failing to initially disclose online booking fees during the purchase of movie tickets.

A notice detailing the implications of this authorization for the rights of group members will be published at a later date, in accordance with a future court order.

The application, filed by Sebastien Ponton, seeks to represent all individuals who paid online booking fees when purchasing movie tickets through Cineplex’s website or mobile application in the province of Quebec between June 15, 2022, and December 12, 2024.

It is alleged that Cineplex engaged in deceptive commercial practices by charging on line booking fees in a manner that obscured price transparency, thereby inducing consumers to complete their purchases without being fully informed of the total costs.

The class action seeks punitive damages for group members, the amount of which will be determined at a later date.

Following the authorization of the class action, Saro Turner, partner at Slater Vecchio, stated: “This decision marks an important step in protecting the rights of Quebec consumers. We are committed to advocating for the interests of group members.”
