For the additional cost, WestJet Premium is an attractive package for customers wanting a little extra comfort on their flights. This package offers larger seats with extra leg and elbow room, priority check-in and boarding, as well as a variety of other perks such as exclusive snacks, beverages and meals. “Discover an exceptional way to fly,” advertises WestJet.

Despite paying a “premium” price for their seats, some customers have reported a less than “exceptional” experience. With little to no notice, these customers report being downgraded from Premium with no compensation and little more than lip service to alleviate their frustration.

WestJet has acquired additional Boeing 737 aircraft, including the Boeing 737 MAX 8 and aircraft previously operated by Swoop and Sunwing Airlines. “The Premium experience is different on these aircraft,” admits WestJet, who confirms that these “Economy seating only” aircraft need to be reconfigured in order to provide the advertised Premium experience.

Last minute aircraft changes by WestJet have allegedly left Premium-paying customers in non-Premium seats with no perks, with some customers alleging that they never received compensation for this downgrade. Instead of fairly compensating passengers for their downgrade from Premium, it has been alleged that WestJet has refused to provide adequate, or any, compensation.

WestJet anticipates the reconfiguration of the “Economy seating only” aircraft will be completed by the end of 2025. Until then, the Premium package you purchased may or may not be as advertised.
